Downloadable
Data

Downloadable data refers to data that is made
available on-line so that the user will be able to
save the data files on his/her computer. Select this
option if you are only interested in data that can be
easily accessed from the Internet without a need to
contact the data providers. Such data might be
downloadable directly from DDCN or from other websites.
Data Free of
Charge

Select this option if you want to narrow down
your search to avoid retrieving data sets that need to
be purchased. It refers to data publicly available
at no cost to the user.
Data
Time Period

If you are searching for data covering a
particular time period (e.g. early transition 1990 -
1995) select from the drop down menu the option that is
closest to your needs. This will help narrow the search
and return only those datasets that refer to the
selected time interval.
Macro/Micro

Macro data refers to data at the national
level, as opposed to micro data which includes
individual, household and firm level data. Typical
examples of macro data are country level time series of
GDP per capita, inflation, etc. Examples of micro
data are surveys and registry data. Select one of
these two categories to help you find the data that you
are most interested in.
Cross
Section/Panel

This drop down has three options. Select the
one that best fits your research purposes to narrow
down the search.
Cross Section: Survey data from a set of units at
one particular point in time.
Time Series: Observations of a variable made over
time. Time Series can also be constructed from cross sectional studies if the same
questions are asked more than once over time.
Panel (Longitudinal): the same individuals (or
households, or firms) are interviewed over time.
EXAMPLE
Suppose a user is interested in finding readily
available, free, time series data on inflation in Russia
between 1991 and 1994. Here is how the advance search
would look like:
