To distinguish between the different ways in which data files can be
accessed, we implemented seven categories as follows:
Downloadable
from DDCN

The dataset is archived at DDCN and made
available on-line via this website for downloading. Any
user can save the data on his/her computer for free. All
that we require is a simple registration process.
Downloadable
from other websites (follow link)

The dataset can be freely downloaded from the
website of the data provider. On the page describing the
dataset, the user will be presented with a direct
hyperlink to a website that posts the data.
Contact
data provider (may require membership)

The dataset is available from data providers
other than DDCN. Sometimes the data is downloadable but
it may require membership (for example, studies from
ICPSR data archive appear under this category).
Contact
data provider (restricted access)

The data is available from data providers
other than DDCN. Access is restricted so the user will
have to contact the data provider directly. Where
possible, DDCN indicates in the Notes field what exactly
the restriction is.
Contact
data provider (fee based)

The data is available from data providers
other than DDCN. The data cannot be accessed for free.
Users that are already affiliated with institutions
that purchased the rights to such datasets might have
access to the data.
Contact the researcher

The dataset is archived at DDCN. However,
prior to releasing the data to the public, the
researcher or institution who provided DDCN with the
data would like to be contacted by the user. This
option will lead to possible data exchanges between data
users and data providers.
Contact
DDCN

The user interested in acquiring
datasets from this category will need to provide further
information on how they intend to use the data. The user
has to send a email to DDCN expressing
interest in acquiring the data and DDCN will follow up
on the request. It is up to the data provider (researcher) to
grant permission for use of the data.
