Globalization
and Workers in Developing Countries (Jan
2003) This paper reviews the academic literature on the
subject, including several studies currently under way, and
derives the implications for public policy. First, it deals
with the effects of openness to trade, foreign direct
investment, and financial crises on average wages. Second, it
discusses the impact of exposure to world markets on the
dispersion of wages by occupation, skill, and gender. Third,
it describes the pattern of job destruction and job creation
associated with globalization.
World
Development Report 2003: Sustainable Development in a Dynamic
Economy (2002)
Growth in material well-being is a central element in
advancing human welfare and reducing poverty. However, if
policies to increase aggregate wealth waste natural resources,
inflict unnecessary damage on critical environmental
processes, undermine social cohesion, or fail to rapidly
reduce poverty, they can generate serious problems. Sustaining
growth over the long term therefore requires that such
problems be addressed integrally in current growth strategies
and investment programs.
Development,
Trade, and the WTO: A Handbook (2002)
This handbook offers guidance on the design of trade policy
reform, surveys key disciplines and the functioning of the
World Trade Organization (WTO), and discusses numerous issues
and options that confront developing countries in using
international cooperation to improve domestic policy and
obtain access to export markets. (The printed product also
includes two CD-ROMs (with content not available via this PDF
version): CD-ROM 1 with "A Dataset on Trade and
Production, 1976-99" by Alessandro Nicita and Marcelo
Olarreaga; and CD-ROM 2 with “Applied Trade Policy for
Developing Countries: Outline, Content, and Readings for a
Short Course” by Jaime de Melo and Marc Bacchetta.)
Global
Economic Prospects 2002
This report begins with a review of global prospects and ways
globalization links the fates of industrial and developing
countries. The report then considers issues in four broad
areas that are particularly important to developing countries:
merchandise trade, services, transport, and intellectual
property rights. A final chapter summarizes the
forward-looking policy agenda, and assesses the potential
impact of further global integration and more rapid growth for
the standards of living in poor countries everywhere.
Global
Development Finance 2002
Global Development Finance (GDF) was formerly published as
World Debt Tables. The new name reflects the report's expanded
scope and greater coverage of private financial flows. GDF
Volume I consists of Analysis and Summary Tables which contain
analysis and commentary on recent developments in
international finance for developing countries. Summary
statistical tables are included for selected regional and
analytical groups comprising 148 countries.
Transition
- The First Ten Years: Analysis and Lessons for Eastern Europe
and the Soviet Union
(Jan 2002) According to this report, published almost exactly
ten years after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in
December 1991, barriers to the creation of new firms are a
critical obstacle to sustained growth in the transition
countries of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.
Globalization,
Growth, and Poverty: Building an Inclusive World Economy
(2002) According to this report, globalization has helped
reduce poverty in a large number of developing countries but
it must be harnessed better to help the world’s poorest,
most marginalized countries improve the lives of their
citizens.
A
Preliminary Strategy To Develop A Knowledge Economy in
European Union Accession Countries (2002)
This report discusses the implications for the EU Accession
countries of the global revolution in knowledge, and of the
development of knowledge economies in the most advanced
industrial countries. It provides a very preliminary strategy
for the countries to follow in developing knowledge economies,
and a preliminary strategy for the World Bank to assist them
in this process.
